An aparthotel suits most Bournemouth stays of more than a night or two better than a hotel: you get a kitchen, a living area and often a washing machine, you let yourself in with a code, and the price per night is usually shared across more space. A hotel is the better choice if you want a reception desk, daily housekeeping and breakfast downstairs. The right answer depends on how long you stay, who you travel with and how you like to eat.
Flexiestays runs both kinds of space. Most of its buildings are aparthotels, and a few have hotel-style double and family rooms, so this comparison is based on what each actually offers.
The main differences
| Aparthotel (Flexiestays apartment) | Traditional hotel | |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Full kitchen in apartments | Usually none, perhaps a kettle |
| Space | Separate living area, one to three bedrooms | One room |
| Laundry | Washing machine in apartments | Laundry service, charged |
| Check-in | Self check-in with a code, from 3pm | Reception desk |
| Cleaning | Before and after your stay; mid-stay on request | Daily housekeeping |
| Breakfast | Not included, you have a kitchen | Often available |
| Parking | Free on site at most buildings | Varies, often charged in town centres |
| Support | Local team, 24/7 by phone and WhatsApp | Front desk |
Space and a kitchen
The kitchen is what changes a stay most. It means breakfast at your own pace, a packed lunch for the beach and an evening in when nobody wants to go out. Flexiestays apartments have a hob, oven, fridge, dishwasher, cookware, crockery and cutlery, and guests use them:
“Everything was so clean and the kitchen was great we ended up staying in every night to cook.” (Sophie, Trustpilot)
“It’s a well equipped unit with washing machine, dishwasher and fridge freezer, iron and ironing board and sockets for charging your devices.” (Jane, Trustpilot)
For families and groups, the separate living area matters as much as the kitchen. Children can go to bed in one room while adults stay up in another, which a single hotel room cannot offer. See Bournemouth with children for which buildings suit families.
Standard and comfort
Serviced apartments are sometimes assumed to be a step down from a hotel. Reviewers of Flexiestays often say the opposite:
“You would be hard-pressed to find a five-star hotel that offers the same quality of finish, space, and comfort that Flexiestays provides.” (Richard, Trustpilot)
Every apartment comes with fresh linen and towels, fibre Wi-Fi, a smart TV with Netflix and Disney+, an iron and a hair dryer, and many have a workspace. Every guest can also use the free gym, open 24 hours, and the games room at The Shore House Hotel, a few minutes on foot from the other buildings. More on the facilities reviews page.
Where a hotel wins
A hotel is the better choice when:
- You want someone at a desk. Aparthotels use self check-in. Flexiestays has a team on call 24 hours a day, but no reception.
- You want the room made up daily. Flexiestays cleans before you arrive and after you leave. On stays of seven nights or fewer a mid-stay clean can be added for a fee, but it is not the default.
- You want breakfast included. There is no breakfast; there is a kitchen, and cafés within walking distance.
- It is one night and you only need a bed. For a single night the extra space matters less.
If you like the idea of a hotel room without the hotel price, Flexiestays also has hotel-style rooms. The Shore Retreat Hotel has doubles, doubles with a balcony and family rooms with a double and a single bed, and The Pebbles Hotel, The Coast Hotel and The Seabreeze Hotel have compact double and family rooms alongside their apartments. These rooms do not all have a full kitchen, so check the listing.
Check-in and check-out
Hotel check-in means a queue at a desk. At Flexiestays you get your arrival instructions and a unique access code three days before you travel, and you let yourself in any time from 3pm. Check-out is by 10am, with no desk to visit: you lock the door and go. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested and are confirmed in writing when the schedule allows.
Guests describe the process as simple, which is the point. Read the check-in reviews for how it works in practice, or the help centre article on what is included in your apartment for the full list.
Price
Comparing prices fairly means comparing like with like. A hotel room sleeps two; a two-bedroom apartment sleeps a family. Add the cost of eating every meal out, parking in town, and laundry on a longer trip, and the gap usually favours the apartment for stays of several nights. For a week or more, Flexiestays discounts automatically, and from 28 nights the monthly rate includes every bill.
Booking on flexiestays.com rather than a marketplace also opens up the discount code shown in the site banner and the option to pay 25% to book. See Flexiestays vs Booking.com.
Which to choose
- One night, travelling light: a hotel room or a Flexiestays double room.
- A weekend for two: either works; an apartment gives you a kitchen and a sofa.
- A family week by the beach: an apartment, for the space and the kitchen.
- A month for work or a move: an apartment on a monthly rate. See staying a month or more in Bournemouth.

More reviewsWe had a great stay here with Jon and Flexistays. Jon was super responsive and helpful. The apartment was clean, the only problem was the rug was very hairy, but when we told Jon about this, he and the team immediately responded and cleaned. They provided washing machine tablets on request as well. Very good value for money, good location for the sea front, with some really nice restaurants and a small Nisa just down the road. Would definitely consider staying again.
If you want an apartment that is within easy walking distance to Bournemouth's sea front yet a quiet location this is the place to stay. The apartment is clutter free, clean with a very comfortable bed and good working kitchen. The place would benefit from some home touches but it met most of our needs. Highly recommend 😊
Frequently asked questions
What is an aparthotel?
An aparthotel is a building of serviced apartments run like a hotel: you book by the night, the apartment is cleaned and made up before you arrive, and a team looks after the building, but you get a kitchen and living space instead of a single room.
Do Flexiestays apartments have kitchens?
Apartments have a full kitchen with hob, oven, fridge, dishwasher, cookware and crockery. Some rooms at The Shore Retreat Hotel and The Coast Hotel are hotel-style rooms rather than apartments, so check the listing.
Is there daily cleaning at Flexiestays?
No. The apartment is cleaned before you arrive and after you leave. On stays of seven nights or fewer a mid-stay clean can be added for a fee; servicing on monthly stays is agreed when you book.
Is there a reception desk?
No. Every building uses self check-in with a code, from 3pm, and the local team is available by phone, WhatsApp and email 24 hours a day.
